First tow with 6.7, same route as with 6.4.

My son and I just got back from a couple of days at deer camp which allowed me to tow with the '13 F350 DRW 6.7 for the first time. I went the same route two weeks ago with my '10 F350 DRW 6.4L. I got a good comparison between the two on the TT toyhauler. The jury is still out on the nearly 16k 5er, but that day is fast approaching. First off, the mileage was 2.3 mpg better with the 6.7 on the same route, with the same equipment in the camper. The TT TH only weighs 6700 empty, but is full of water(102 gallons), the four wheeler and two huge full coolers so my guess is she weighs around 8600 pounds on this trip. Second thought was that the 6.7 drives like a luxury car instead of a truck. The steering is much more 'nimble' for the lack of a better term. The power steering unit feels much more 'free' than the 6.4. Third thought is POWER. Not just power, but effortless power. I thought the 6.4 pulled things well, but nothing like this. Easy acceleration under any conditions, dead stop, uphill, passing, whatever. Also, I have to watch the speed limit constantly as I can't judge it in this truck yet. I am running 65 without needing to be running that fast. This thing is an absolute dream to drive!! I was very pleased with the trip except for one thing. I have a high pitched whine, almost whistle when accelerating in the gears 1 through 4. It almost sounds like a turbo boot with a pin hole in it, but my sons also points out that is could be the tranny..Will keep an eye on it for sure! Anyway, I LOVE THIS TRUCK! Although I now only have 950 miles on her. I really didn't think there would be that much difference, but boy was I wrong.

I got 15.8 on the first tank of fuel from the dealer. The other numbers were pulling. Funny thing about the 6.4, it got the same mileage pulling either big 5er or the smaller toyhauler. I am looking forward to better mileage.

That is because of the difference in aeordynamics. Bumper pulls create a lot of wind drag compared to a 5er.

"M" is manual mode. There is a gear selector toggle on the shifter that allows you to command the gears up or down manually. It is a nice feature originated by GM with the Allison transmission and now everybody has it. If you want to take off in 2nd or 3rd gear, you can make it do it. You can pretty much lock into any gear you want except the computer can force a downshift when the rpm drop below a certain level or it will force an upshift if the rpm exceed a preset number.

I use it on the highway to keep from downshifting out of 6th at every little hill while towing my toy hauler.

What is M? I guess all my vehicles are too old to have the Magic position. These new transmissions are really fancy.

I have gotten the same fuel mileage as FishOnOne, but in really limited conditions.

Flat ground.

No wind.

And keeping the speed down to 55 to 60 MPH.

Mind you, it is mostly after dark I drive like this. We've got some very big, corn fed, 200 pound plus white tail deer in this area of South Dakota and I just would not want to meet one out on the road at night. The old night vision is not what it used to be, so I always slow down after dark.

With the dually (as mine is) I usually get mid 16's up into the 17's, always dependent on wind conditions. That's at normal daylight speeds in the 65-72 MPH range.

Oh gosh! I should add these are non-towing numbers.

With my '13 6.7, I'm getting 11.5-12.5 when towing, and 17 on the highway (flat ground). That was babying it. I'm amazed if anyone is getting 19-21. Is that downhill both ways?

No hills it's pretty much flat. I get 16.4 - 17 mixed driving. I filled up last night drove to work and a nearby town today and I checked my fuel mileage when I pulled up to the house and I drove ~64 miles at 20.1 mpg today.

Here's a snap shot of my fuel mileage this morning.

The actual mileage calculated by hand was 10.3. The truck only has 800 miles on it when we started the trip. Also, the 6.4 got 8.1 down this same stretch of rural Georgia road. We had to go through 5 small towns to get there. That also kept the mileage down with the starting and stopping. The DIC showed a close 10.2 mpg. The 6.4 got close to that mileage with my 15.5k 5er too. So I can't wait to see how much I get with the bigger rig and see if the mileage improves as she breaks in.

I have the 3.73 Limited Slip in mine. I think a 4.30 would be overkill from what I've read, unless you pull in the mountains a lot..Still itching to hook up the 5er for a trip around the block!!!:B

A 8600 Lbs TT should not be a challenge for the 6.7. It has a much better reputation than the 6.4 it replaced.
