Is your Ram towing as Good as it should?

Or does it not have the power it should have. It seems that Ram is putting the WRONG gear in their trucks. Seems if you ordered a 3.55.1 axle. You could have got a 3.21.1 axle.
AND they won't even offer to change it out once you catch it. That's just wrong.
Lawsuit now in progress.

This whole issue is like a social media attack on some poor high school kid. Just because there's a story on the internet it MUST be true. And just because it happened on a small group of vehicles the whole brand is bad and every truck is bad.

It's like some people just sit and home and wait for a negative headline to break so they can get on an internet forum and spread panic, fear and negativity.

The damage may be more than just the gears.
Since tow ratings are usually different depending on the gears one has,,,, then one may have inadverdantly been over loading the truck. This can cause other problems such as REDUCED tranny life. Dodge should be paying for that as well.

I have a friend that bought a used Dodge 3500 cummins. He blew the tranny, and spent a good chunk of change fixing it. Later he had it in the shop for a differential leak. The mechanic pointed out to him, that the previous owner had installed 3.21 gears in place of the 4.10s it had from the factory. That is why he blew up the tranny.

I would want the gears I ordered, and a 200,000 mile powertrain warranty, or a new truck.

Some of you guys really can bring out the 'parade of horribles!' I agree, Ram should either put the right gears in or give some money, but let's not get too carried away ...

Funny how some people bash the lawyers and others start asking for compensation for what 'could' have happened!
It is not "what could've happened". It is what did happen. This is a towing forum. Therefor it is reasonable to assume that those here with the affected trucks,,, tow with them. Dodge themselves has in the past, and probably still does,,, reccommend against towing with 3.21 gears.
One can easily signifignantly overload the drivetrain with these gears, shortening its lifespan. Just because it hasn't "broke" yet, doesn't mean that damage hasn't occured that will cause an early failure. And Dodge should be on the hook for that. A generous extended warranty should be offered at the minumum... If you are correct, and there is no damage to any of the drivetrains as a result of this mistake, then Dodge will not incur signifignant costs for this, as there will be few failures.

As for what I would want... A new truck. I tow heavy and often into remote places. A breakdown on one of my trips would be much more than a inconveinence. I am counting on my TV to be able to be reliable doing what it is supposed to be capable of. A warranty won't get me home on time. A reliable truck will.

Quoted from Car And Driver:
Interestingly, Besley’s case is not an isolated incident. The AN report indicates that additional Ram owners in Colorado, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington have reported in internet forums that their Ram 1500s were also delivered with a 3.21:1 axle instead of the desired 3.55:1 unit.
In the same forums, owners claimed to have received restitution from Ram or their dealer in the form of free extended-service contracts or the option of trading their truck for one properly equipped. When reached for comment, Fiat-Chrysler told C/D: “Only a limited number of consumers were affected, and Chrysler identified and reached an amicable restitution with those buyers shortly after the discrepancy was discovered.”

Also read the below on a Dodge Forum:

"Also apparently FCA as other manufactures do the same had sent out corrected window stickers that were to be posted but the dealer for some reason had not posted this one when this guy had bought the truck so it is not like FCA was attempting to be fraudulent, the dealer is the one who made the mistake but it gets a little more interesting in this truck had been transferred between dealers and that it seems may be where the issue with the correct window sticker happened."

Wouldn't be a class action suit if it were only one truck. A large number of plaintiffs would need to be involved. So, the problem is either quite a bit more prevalent than that, or it is being misreported as a class action suit when it really is just a single plaintiff.

So it should not have been a problem. To me if it is just one that is even more of a shame on Ram not fixing this.

Either way, it sucks.

I wonder what the RAM towing guide said. Lol

I've checked that site before while standing next to a new Ram just for fun.

Lol

Thanks!

Robert Besley Jr. bought a 2014 Ram 1500 that he thought had 3.55:1 gears, as listed on the window sticker on the truck; however, it actually had 3.21:1 gears

2014 RAM 1500
3:55 and 3:21

He got 3:21 vs 3:55 as listed on the 'Monroney'

Just think if the rear gear didnt match the front

uh...that also happened to a cummins forum member....He had, if I can remember correctly, 4:10 in the rear and 3:73 in the front , or vice/versa....but it DID happen...and Ram made that right if not mistaken..He found this out by fuel mileage he was getting, he thought he should be doing better and looking at RPM it didn't add up...he even measured distance and use the formula's to figure out he had wrong gearing in the rear...can't remember how he found out about the front...but never put it in 4 wheel drive...can be researched...

Shouldn't be towing with a 1500 anyway :B

...and to add...they only offer 3:42 in the 2500 and the 3500 SRW truck...The 3500 dually is the ONLY one in this class to be offered 3:42, 3:73 or 4:10...Have no clue what gearing is in a 1500..
