milage question

I have been on the forum for a few years now and keep reading about people saying they have x number of miles on the trailer. How are you arriving at this? There is no odometer on the trailer. is it just a guess calculated from all the trips you took? Sounds like a lot of paper work to keep track of miles.. Answers please.

^^ especially with my bad memory.

We tow too many different trailers for the truck to keep track by itself.

I keep an excel spread sheet of repairs and miles towed. It helps me remember when tires are replaced for example.

Its also a great asset to have a complete repair schedule when you go to sell it. Or when it gets totaled and you have to verify what you did to it.

X4

I really like doing this because it keeps me up on needed maintenance issues. How old are the tires? When did we replace the batteries? When do I need to pack the bearings again?

My 2015 Ram has a gauge that tells me miles when trailer is connected. I just found it after a year.LOL

I too used to keep a log but this new Ford does that for me as soon as I plug in the light plug in, the brake controller knows it's there and records the towing mileage.

I keep a simple log of trips = miles

Sometimes i forget to add short weekend trips. but i dont care to have an exact number, just a relative idea to keep my maintenance scheduled timely

As others have noted, I keep a log of all my RV trips that include among other things the total miles of any excursion as well as "Trailer Miles" so I can don't include sight-seeing miles when I'm not connected to the trailer. To date, my 2009 Jayco has accumulated just over 31K miles. I also log maintenance items/expenses, gas expenditures, camping fees, etc. Maybe it's a little OCD, but keeping a journal has been fun, too.

My truck has an odometer for each trailer that I pull.

Thanks for the replies. I figured it was manual tracking for the most part.

Estimate for me, but you can add on odometer to the trailer axle hub.

Since our truck is used almost exclusively for moving the 5er from one volunteer position to another using Google maps each move can be added together for mileage on the trailer.
