When it was posted that the ford f150 used Aluminum, which also contained magnesium. I asked what percentage it would need be, for magnesium to cause flammability. I got a good answer from one poster. But was attacked by others.

Just for the boards information. I also posted that Jeep has a transfer case cover made of Magnesium. Trying to divert some of the attacks.

Beside posting a photo of a F series burning. I also posted a video of the Jeep burning.

I am still being attacked on that topic even though the OP requested the talk on that subject to stop.

I asked a simple question. I was attacked like I started a flame war?

A great many vehicles come with parts made of Magnesium. Valve covers being a purpose, many times.

Here is one for the Viper. (It also has magnesium valve covers.)

'The SRT-10 weighed around 100 pounds less than previous models. Thirty-four pounds were saved with the use of a one-piece magnesium front of dash; the cast magnesium instrument panel support provided lower torso energy management with no additional steel parts required (an industry first), and a weight savings.'

Buddy again:

I don't like the use of magnesium in areas inhabited by people.

It is true that if the interior of a vehicle reached the level needed to ignite magnesium. The temp would have to be above that which was survivable.

But the dangers of a magnesium fire reach far from those trapped in a car. For instance multiple car wrecks and the passengers in the other vehicle. Also wrecks with vehicles containing fuels or other combustible materials.

Fireman go to a fire to extinguish it. They don't go there to watch it burn. They see some horrible sights and a vehicle wreck some of the worst.

If there was a requirement that the cars exterior was marked for firemen, if the vehicle contained parts made of magnesium. Manufacturers would stop using it.

Why purposely plant a magnesium bomb in/on a car.

Why should they be allowed to put things so dangerous as magnesium in a car.

1) Gaseous Hydrogen (GH2) per volume is safer than liquid gasoline.
2) GH2 will rapidly rise up into the atmosphere when released while gas will puddle on the ground
3) GH2 has a very narrow explosive level (LEL - UEL). It is very difficult to make GH2 Explode.
4) A GH2 fire event is very short lived. It's a rising orange fire ball that is over very quickly, within seconds. Liquid gas will puddle on the ground, off-gas to a gaseous form (which is the only form that burns) and produces a combustion source for several minutes.

Spoon,
The OMG, Don't let the truth blind you, was intended for the inconsiderate poster. Read my post on page 4. I mentioned magnesium to set the stage. My Complaint was with the attitude of some posters. Not just with this theme, not with just me.
There appears to be a clique playing a game. The place for that is around the campfire. As I said before I have been a member of this board for over 15 years. Before it even took on its appearance it has today. And really nothing has ever changed. Trying to get a good answer with out getting any grief is near impossible.

Around the campfire was supposed to control this cliqueness. But it has done no good.

As for your question. The people trapped in the car you ran into may be greatly concerned about your magnesium fire in your hydrogen powered car. Or maybe just your magnesium fire. (There are hydrogen powered cars on the road today).

In the Jeep the problem was with the magnesium skid plate. After a crash and engine compartment fire trash like leaves and oil that collected on the top of the skid plate would ignite the magnesium well before the interior Temps were life threatening. Jeep made a real because of poor design.

Also brave people save burning people from car fires all the time and they do survive.

Just out of curiosity... what does any of this matter? 18 minutes, 21 minutes or 30 minutes... if a human being is in that fire he is dead LONG before the magnesium has burned it apart.

Any vehicle can catch fire if the right ingredients are present. I've seen how quickly a small vehicle fire can become fully engulfed. As a police officer, I've seen just how useless a small fire extinguisher is against a vehicle fire, without magnesium. I've felt how hot a car fire gets without magnesium... you won't survive it.

Bottom line, Ford/GM/Ram/Toyota/Nissan... I don't want to be inside any vehicle that is on fire. The magnesium doesn't scare me any more than the fuel tank or plastics that are in EVERY vehicle do.

So Magnesium isn't an option package then?

Decide for yourself. Autoblog.com said it took 21 minutes to burn to the ground

To find out more just google it.

Don't believe everything you see on the internet.

BTW I drive a lithium powered car every day :B No worries.

My original post wasn't meant solely to address magnesium. I stated my opinion. Then meant to speak to the wise *** remarks made by some posters.

I already had my answer concerning the magnesium content of aluminum. I explained that in my first post.

For those of you not concerned with magnesium parts in cars. What are your feelings about hydrogen powered cars. They are on the road now.

Most think nothing else but the Hindenburg when you mention a hydrogen vehicle.

Now what are your concerns about the use of magnesium in hydrogen powered cars.

As far as Lithium Batteries. Tesla has already recognized the fire hazard of the original production and has plans to improve safety. Are the lithium fires hot enough to ignite magnesium.

The Video of the full size F series truck that burnt was staggering. It burnt to the ground in 18 minutes. It was gone in those 18 minutes. A pile of molten metal that would fit in half a pickup bed.

My brother is a retired firemen. He drove a one man engine. It was those engines that were sent to vehicle fires. They contain 300 gallons of water and a 1 1/2 inch hose. And at that are way overloaded. There is no back up when they get to the scene and it may be a while before back up gets there on a crowded freeway.

For those Wise *** posters. Your remarks are not new nor have they ever been funny. I started on this board over 15 years ago. It is the same old remarks hashed over and over again.

Do you have anything new and informative to contribute? If not try taking up whittling. This forum is supposed to be informative not a comedy show. For comedy go to Around the Campfire. That is it's purpose.

When I hear a fanboy taking the stance some on this board has taken. I think car salesmen, the exact type of person I had hoped to avoid.

There are thousands of RV'ers who are afraid to post on these boards because of the fear of the idiotic remarks some of you have made. Why should a person come here for an answer. At least the car salesmen won't belittle me!

I come here occasionally in search of a answer. It appears some of you have found this board a home for you and your clique.

I went to a parade today.

Why don't some of you take a break. Go do some camping. Leave the board to those that are knowledgeable and can communicate that knowledge in a meaningful way.

Has no one mentioned the motorcycles sitting in many of our garages? Anything but Harley, and holy bejeebous you have a lot of magnesium.

Does it worry me? Not in the least.

The fuel in the bikes tank, the 3-2-1/2 gallon gas cans, and the two car/suv 16 and 26 gallon tanks should create a little more worry than magnesium parts and pieces. AND HOW ABOUT ALL THAT PLASTIC which ignites easier than magnesium car/motorcycle parts!

In the grand scheme of worry, I don't ever think about such things until a conversation like this comes up. And then.....MOVE ON. This is ridiculous.

^^^^^^^^ Great post!

This thread reminds me of the people that worry themselves sick about propane. Oh my God, I have a fuel in a tank that can catch fire or blow up! NS, LOL.

When I ask about the 25 gallons of the liquid fuel they carry in their TV I can see their blank stare?

Beside, magnesium is harmless compared to zinc. Look at what zinc can do!!! Now anything that can do that is VERY DANGEROUS!! :B

Just wait until they start putting those lithium batteries in cars. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Ever see metallic lithium dropped into water? Immediate fire and explosion.
Magnesium is child's play in comparison.

You are trying to make an issue out of something that simply is not an issue. I've been a paid firefighter for over 22 years and in that time I've put out many car fires, including a couple of old style VWs with magnesium engine blocks. Contrary to what you have said, you CAN extinguish a piece of burning magnesium with water. Rather than hitting it with a straight stream, a wide fog pattern is used to indirectly cool the fire. When the mag cools sufficiently, it stops burning.

There are many materials in today's cars to be concerned with in the event of fire, like gasoline, rubber and especially the high amount of plastic in car interiors. A few components made of magnesium don't make cars any more dangerous. JMHO.
