RGV RV Parks

We would like to visit the RGV area this coming winter.

We walk a lot so would prefer parks within walking distance(a mile) to stores (Walmart, Grocery Stores) etc. Would like something away from heavy traffic and from noisy trains at night.

As for the RV Park, we don't need much. Would like to have a pool and hot tub and be in a clean quiet park.

Would appreciate any suggestions on where to go for the winter.

KOA on SPI has a hot tub and pool PLUS there is a free shuttle that goes anyplace you may need. Lot's of walking and biking for those that enjoy it. County park is cheaper, but no real facilities to speak of other then FHU and cable.

Permanent RV's are not allowed in either park so you will be among other mobile RV'ers if that's what you like. Nice way to pick up other places to stay and go to on the migration path.

Whatever you do don't book long term if you can afford it. The reason why you get a cheaper rate is because (IMO)after a month or two you would move on otherwise if you weren't locked into that park/area.

Canyon Lake just north of Mission is close to Walmart and a large Grocery store as well as a couple of good restaurants.

Library, indoor shuffleboard, championship caliber billiard hall, exercise room, art and craft classes, dancing, an remote control model car track with grandstand. The list goes on and on. If anyone is bored here, then they are boring people.

I am an mobile RV repairman and have worked in most of the RGV Parks in the Mission area over the past eight years. I suggest you go down without a reservation and pick a park for a week. Then, drive around and explore. None of the parks are full in October, November or December.

As mentioned there are hundreds of places to stay, from little mom and pop parks to the big corporate places. Prices are all over the place. Alamo Rec-Veh accepted Canadian dollars one for one last season. Not sure about this fall. They also cater to single RVers with reduced rates.

Since you're zeroing in on Mission, TX, you won't find a quiet park that you can walk to WalMart. ๐Ÿ™‚ It's a busy place.

Go to RVParkReviews.com and pick your town and read reviews of the parks listed for a start. There are 93 parks listed for Mission.

There are many other smaller towns surrounding Mission. Check them out.

We've stayed in Tropic Winds in Harlingen several times. It's nice.

If you're travelling from Ottawa area like we do (Jasper just south of Smiths Falls) I wouldn't stop at Corpus. There's a big difference in weather that last couple hundred km.

There are over 500 parks in the RGV so definitely something for everyone and every price range.
We stay at Victoria Palmsin Donna Texas which is pretty much mid valley. So not too far from anything.
We have a new Walmart less than a mile from our park. Don-Wes flea market adjoins our park. Dollar General very close.

A nice little Border town Nuevo Progresso where we have all of our dental work done is maybe 5 miles. Lot's of good restaurants and fun shopping in Nuevo Progresso.

There are all kinds of specials for first time visitors at Victoria Palms.. :W
Tell them Ron & Shirley 2371 said to check them out. ๐Ÿ™‚

Wherever you end up enjoy your winter.

Stayed in RGV 3 times at Bentsen Grove in Mission, Victoria Palms, Donna, and Llano Grande in Mercedes. None were close to stores but there are hundreds of parks in the valley. Suggest you look at something like rvparkreviews to find something. Prices can be great but I would stay closer to the coast (Padre) next time if possible. Its a long drive from a place like Mission.

I have never camped in that area but it sure is a beautiful drive through...

Corpus Christi and the Padre Island is a great place... Not sure how far south you can drive down the Island however...

I spent about a month at Raymondville TX at a Electronic work site a few years back...

The RIO GRANDE Valley State Park is known for its bird viewing...

Texas is sure getting its share of flooding this season - almost biblical proportion it seems... The Trinity and Brazos Rivers almost cut the large Texas state in half and when they flood it is pure havoc... We lived in North Texas for several years...
