5th Wheel Pin Weight on 2500HD Chevy HELP!!!

I am not looking for the weight police to chime in, I am looking for answers from people with the above truck or a legitimate answer. I am going to pull the trigger on a 2500HD this week (truck is already picked out with deal made) but didn't do it due to just needing to make sure I am within specs.

The truck is a 2014 2500LTZ 4x4 crew cab with a Duramax/Allison combination. GVWR 10000lbs. The truck specs are 2706# payload, 6200# rear axle, 5200# front axle 15800# fifth wheel towing, 24500# GCVWR

My fifth wheel that I currently own and will be pulling with it is a 2014 Keystone Cougar High Country 315RES. Specs are 8563 empty with 2437 carrying capacity...leading to 11000# Gross rating. I know this is fine, but the pin weight is listed at 1600# and when I weighted it on our truck scales it was closer to 1800# loaded.

Is anyone towing something similar to this and do you feel I am within specs to be legal?

You will be just a little heavier than my setup and I tow absolutely fine. You will be OK. I added airbags, not so much for weight but to stop the porpoising..

Enjoy the new truck!

Dpark, good decision going for the 10,000 GVWR suspension option. We have the same set-up with a 12,000 trailer and have zero issue - unlike the prior models @9200 pound GVWR. If I had to buy another today, I would go for the 3500 with an 8 foot bed for the better ride that comes with a longer wheelbase. You won't be disappointed

I have a 2013 LTZ Diesel turck and pull a 28SGS and on the scales it had 2,000 lBS pin weight and it tows great. My door sticker reads 2475 LBS so lower than what chevy website states. The 28SGS is listed as a 1/2 ton towable.

UPDATE: I gave them the go ahead to get the truck to their dealership. (had to do a dealer trade) and it will be detailed and ready for me on Saturday to pick up at their dealership. I am extremely excited to be getting this unit. Thanks for the good conversation and giving me your real world experiences with similar units.

Just sold my 10 yr old 2500HD which was primarily used for towing our fivers. MY GVWR was 9200 lbs but same rear GAWR as you have. Anyway, my first fiver had a 1600 lb dry pin weight and pulled it for 7 yrs all over US and Canada. 2nd fiver had a 1900 lb dry pin weight. But my truck was not stock, it had a custom utility bed that weighed 400 lbs more than stock bed and a 45 gal TransferFlow replacement tank. I don't have the weight tickets since they went with the truck, and while it was over GVWR, it never exceeded rear GAWR.

Used a Jordan brake controller (no longer available) which provided balanced braking and as a result, the truck still had original brake pads with good thickness remaining.

Yes, my new truck is a 3500, it wasn't a mainstream optioned truck, sat on the lot for 6 months, so got a great deal. But I would have been just as happy with an equivalent deal on a 2500HD.

I don't have a Chevy but I have a Ram 2500 CTD with a 2176 CCC. My Pin is also 1800lbs loaded. I'm over my 9600lb GVW by 200lbs. Under my RAWR by 1100lbs, under tow rating by 3200lbs. Tows absolutely great. I don't see why you need a 3500. You have more GVW than I do.
I would say if you have your heart set on that 2500, get it and enjoy it.

I just bought the same truck only a GMC with the 6.0 engine, either way the payload is rated the same at 3066. The payload does go up to 4190 with standard box on the 3500 HD.
You have 350# more payload because yours is a gasser. Do you have a 4x4? That knocks 300# off the payload number.
OP said his payload is 2706#. I suspect he has 2WD as I looked at a 2014 4x4 with 10K GVWR and it only had 2400# of payload. Which meant the truck weighed 1100# more than my '05!:E
No wonder the Big 3 are trying to lose some weight!

Sold the fiver and looking for a DP, but not in any hurry right now.

NC Hauler,
I appreciate your input. I have done my homework. The truck I currently pull it with is over. I also have the benefit of having a set of 35' platform scales at our family coal yard/truck storage facility that are state certified to 110,000# (don't think I need to max them out...lol) and my actual pin was 1800 and change loaded on return from a trip last fall when I really wanted to weigh the truck's axle weight, pin weight and trailer axles. It really is nice being able to go up there on a Sunday when we are closed and take as much time on the scales as you want to get your numbers.

As many have stated, and I know this all too well, I don't plan to buy a bigger camper any time in the future. It is a 2014 model we searched long and hard for and didn't "settle" for anything but exactly what we wanted.

Great advice from everyone so far!!! Thanks.

Yeah, I really believe it's a non-issue, that is not a heavy 5er for today's 2500's, and again, I towed heavier with an 03 Chevy 2500 D/A...did fine...Enjoy:)

Great combo with room to spare.

I've pulled a 11200 lb 5er with a '03 2500 Dodge/Cummins since the truck was new. Its a towing dream and always look forward the the next trip to the mountains ..... or even pulling in strong headwinds. Your new Dmax has lots or hp/torque so your gonna' like it.
AS other posters mentioned you will be well under the trucks GAWR and RAWR/tire load ratings in particular if dot comes knockin' which is rare.

That combination will work just fine for you. Would 3500 be better, yes. Would 3500 DRW be even better? yes. but you do not need it for that size rig. If however you and DW see the 5r of your dreams that is bigger and heavier and you have the 2500 you will kick yourself in the butt. Not speaking from experience or anything like that:R

A 3500 will bump your GVWR up to 11,500 lbs and your payload up to 4,125 lbs. for an otherwise identical truck. It will also give you a 17.000 lb 5th wheel tow rating. Those are pretty big jumps in numbers for relatively little extra cost.

Here are the 3500HD specs

As someone else stated, just because the Manufacturer states in their "brochure" that a truck can tow a certain weight 5er, doesn't really mean it can...One has to do as the OP did and look at ALL the numbers....a 17,000# 5er could have a pin weight of 3400#. One would have to see the cargo carrying capacity of the truck....(GVWR isn't used anymore, RAWR is), so the 3500 very well may be able to tow a 17,000#, but I'd want to know what the truck weighed when loaded like one was going camping, missing only the pin weight number to "do the math with"...(ok, so the weight police came out in me that time, sorry :))
