Driving down Hwy 1 in the Miami/Hollywood area today, the Florida Hwy Patrol had cameras set up along one stretch of the hwy with the following warning sign set up. One trooper said they were looking for expired tags and out of state vehicles belonging to residents..guess Florida decided to jump on the band wagon....Dennis

Many (most?) states have requirements that if you are living in that state, you need to get that state's driver's license and car license plates. I don 't know if they give students or snow bunnies a break.

New Resident

* New residents have 60 days after becoming a resident in Minnesota to obtain a Minnesota license or permit if they have a valid driver's license or instruction permit from another state.

* New residents have 30 days to obtain a Minnesota license after moving to Minnesota if they have a valid commercial driver's license from another state.

If the person works for the United States Armed Forces or are a family member of someone in the Armed Forces stationed in Minnesota and hold a valid out-of-state driver's license the person does not need to obtain a Minnesota license.

Requirements:

New Resident - Applying for Vehicle Registration:

New residents have a 60 day grace period, per Minn. Stat. § 168.012, subd. 8, in which to register their passenger vehicle. This includes passenger vans and 3/4 ton or less pickups, motorcycles, utility trailers, or travel trailers so long as the license plates displayed on the vehicle are current. If registration expires before the 60 day period is up, new resident must obtain Minnesota registration immediately.

It has not in the VA system. We won't reveal if you're crazy or not. A lot of states are making illegal to scan plates, Virginia is not one and neither is Ky. I was pulling my trailer last week and a Ky trooper on I 64 scanned my trailer and then pulled up far enough to type in my base plate. Now they have a record of me being in Ky on I 64, being in Costco in Lexington and eating in a cafe somewhere in western Ky so they could be pretty sure I crossed the whole damn state. I wonder how many cameras at intersections are working and record every vehicle passing. Md has camera under every bridge for as they say, traffic observation.

All states are cracking-down on out-of-state registration, I'm surprised Florida is bothering to do it, last I heard, and correct me if I'm wrong, it was $17 to register a vehicle there. It's obvioulsy much more in CA.
Nope. First time registration costs $225 for a new plate, then a sliding scale tax based on vehicle weight each year. Plates for my vehicles when I lived in Florida were about $75 each.
This might prove problematic for me re: Florida cracking down on out of state registrations. I am a co-owner of two vehicles, each owned by my college age student children. I have a Tennessee license, the cars are insured in Tennessee, and they are registered in Tennessee. The children have Florida licenses as they work part-time in Florida while attending school in Pensacola. Wonder what the Florida authorities would do in this instance, one owner being resident in Florida, the other a resident of Tennessee? Which state do you register in?

Here's an article from a south Florida newspaper on why they're doing it.

I think the flashing sign noting they are doing it is in response to the public finding out about it and filing protests.

The BIG issue is they were recording them 24/7's and keeping them on file without the public knowing. Also concerned their statements of tracking.

And of course the gov's answer to everything illegal they do is they do it only to catch criminals. To make you feel all warm and fuzzy and safe and say well ok.:R:R

Highly doubt this is a measure to crack down on out of state plates.

Just another example of technology and big brother watching us. License plate reading has been around for a couple of years already, this is just a new application. Automatic speed ticket system very close. Also in the works - low cost facial memory system. Enter store and you will be greeted by name and directed to items on sale that you are known to be interested in. You can run but you can't hide.

I know this may seem like a soap box, but I have a question. Why all the hype about "privacy" at medical facilities? Medical folks have to spend a large part of their day making sure they don't reveal any private information. Big Brother is watching everywhere else, why is a hospital/health care facility any different?

I spent a good amount of time actually reading one of those hospital privacy act notices one time. If the one I read was any example, then these are just as much about them SHARING information about you to parties they deem acceptable; the government, the insurance industry, the law, the credit bureaus etc etc. Your "signing just to acknowledge receipt" as they will tell you, simply means you have been put on official, legal notice and give your permission (likely at a most unfortunate, possibly vulnerable time).

Look again, our medical records are now part of the huge data base open to all in the medical profession and others.

IF you talk to AAA I think you will find that Flordia is the state where they use the most RED INK when drawing their maps (NOTE: I am not 100% on this) Several areas in Flordia are noted for heavy "out of state" enforcement. and also for abuse of things like RICO laws that let them confiscate an expensive ride even if NOT CRIMINAL ACTIVITY is suspected.

I hope.. This is changing (my data is around 20 years old) but who knows.

I know I have not, personally, had any problems in FL but I've only been there twice.. onece was just over a week ago.. The other time in 1976.

If the states are going to crack down on out-of-state registrations, I guess we can forget that idea.
NO WAY am I going to change registration every 13 weeks!

Generally you don't have to for short term jobs. California probably is as strict as anybody else on this type of thing, and I think you can work here on a "temporary" job for up to six months without changing plates or getting a California DL.
