X2 on only getting any of those pay as you go phone plans using the VERIZON NETWORKS.. Any other networks will be a hit or a miss when you get off the beaten paths...

Check out Tracfone. I have an Android smart phone which uses the Verizon towers. I have service everywhere my DW Verizon phone does.
I don't talk, text, or internet much. I usually buy the 60 minute card which is about $19. I get triple everything with my phone so that card gets me 180 talk minutes, 180 texts, and 180 MEG of data good for 3 months. When you get another card it adds on to whatever you had left over and adds three months on from the end date of the previous card.
This fits my usage model perfectly. I currently have more talk minutes, texts, and data that I will use in several years.
