Where to do a 30# propane exchange

Where would one exchange a 30# propane Rv tank, once expired?

I have done it many times over the years for my home 20# tanks, but never noticed any exchange for 30#. I have a few more years, but figured I should start looking out for a place.

thanks,
Dean

With the "exchange" you might not get what you are paying for.

As refillers get updated training for the new DOT certification rules, I wouldn't be surprised to see closer attention paid to the dates. I've had my 30# portable cylinder refilled three times in Florida recently, and the three different attendants all checked the date. The attendants at the refill station I use near our upstate NY cottage never check it.

Your propane cylinders would have to have been mfg. prior to 2005 to be 'out of date' under 'old' DOT re-certification requirement as re-cert was 12 yrs after date of mfg.

NEW DOT Re-certification NOW 10 yrs after date of mfg. stamped on collar
(EFFECTIVE Jan. 23, 2017)

Visual inspection ----still good for 5 yrs
Proof Pressure Test...was good for 7 yrs---NOW good for 10 yrs
Volumetric Expansion Test...was good for 12 yrs---Now good for 10 yrs

So if your propane cylinders were mfg. prior to 2007 they ARE out of date
Is it time for your medication or mine?

X2!

I am looking at the local Propane dealer, $15 around here. Last time I filled the guy looked for a date, didn't find, but they should be due as in a 2005 5er.

I have gotten 20 lb and smaller cylinders recertified for $5 each at a supplier that also does rural home and business delivery.

I also buy ethanol free gas there.

I'll be going back to them when I need to recertify 2 of my 30 lb cylinders next year.

Where I live, Amerigas will do a recertification (likely all you need), but if it fails, they'll give you new tanks the same size at a discounted rate. JS West propane will do a free replace, but I don't believe they're up in your area.

Best bet is a local propane supplier.

Around here, the local Rent-Alls sell propane and will re-certify a bottle. ACE will as well, if you find one that sells propane.

No exchange I've seen does the bigger tanks. They will, however, take your outdated big one and give you a smaller one.

I had one of my 30's recertified last fall. The refill place that did it charges $5.

Good to know, I did not know they would re-certify tanks. I wonder if Flying-J Truckstops would re-certify?
