Lots of used Canadian trucks on the local Ford lots

We've been browsing the local car lots looking for a used truck to replace the Dodge. Saturday and Sunday we looked at two different Ford lots in two different towns. Each has some 2014-2015 white F250 and F350 gas trucks with low miles. I did a car fax on the first one and it was from Canada (Fort McMurray, AB). I thought that was odd so I looked at the others and they are all from the same area. Why would a dealer in Southern Indiana be buying truck from Canada to sell here ?

OP here,
Thanks for all the feedback. If I'm looking at the truck with 25k miles. What would be normal for engine hours ?

My current truck has 21k miles and under 500 hours. That averages over 42 mph. You will need to attempt to determine if that average implies much idling. If these trucks get driven long distances at 60 mph, and idle half the time, they would average 30 mph. If they get driven where they never go long distances, the average would be lower.

When I sold my HD last year, my average speed was over 42. The buyer was excited, because he believed that the mileage was mainly highway/rural driving.

We own a highway tractor that had 800,000 miles put on it over the course of only 3 years. It was used for long distance hauling and it obviously spent much of those 3 years running down the highway. It still averaged only 40 mph. My guess is that most pick up trucks will average less than 30 mph.

I bought my 2011 new in the USA and imported into Canada. Now 5 years later I am trying to sell it up here and can't get anyone to pay me a penny more than what a broker is offering me who will ship it back to the US. I really don't understand it; there is hardly any used diesel trucks on the market up here and yet we can still get more for our used vehicles wholesaling them out and shipping them south. It kind of offends me some because to a wholesaler my truck is just another 2011 Ford yet the thing still looks like new and has absolutely every option available on it. But, I will end up getting a very similar price for my truck as my friend got for his abused 2011 Lariat.

A lot of oil companies do not own their vehicles, they lease them. If it is a US based company they may lease them in the US and never show Canadian ownership.

A dealer in my area is crying for used trucks. The line is we will give top dollar for your trade. These trades are crossing the border.

Got a dealer name? I have a couple of trucks for sale... I need a good laugh... dealer giving top dollar = oxymoron.

Just know that even though they will have low mileage on them, those trucks were probably always running.
Nobody wants to get back into a cold truck, so they get left idling.
Maybe not such a big deal with a gasser, but diesel's sure don't like it.

Should be able to get a readout on the EVIC. Mine shows operating and idle hours.

Mine to but the OP is talking Fords.

As said, this is not a new practice. One rental outfit I dealt with sold all his trucks to the same used car dealer in AZ. Dealer would throw a cheap lift, wheels and a good detail job on them and sell em as bro mobiles all day long! Low mile used trucks fetch a premium from those who aren't aware and don't check engine hours.
Some of hem could be a good deal but you have to wade through the beat up ones to find a gem.
On the upside, maintenance is usually good. But you can end up with a 70kmi cream puff with 15000 engine hours!
Proceed with caution and know that whoever is selling it bought it for pennies on the dollar.

With respect to warranty, as long as you purchase it from a Ford dealer with warranty you are fine. My F250 was a Canada off lease imported back to the U.S. by Ford. The computer keeps data in both km and miles. They just change the cluster face and set it to miles. It still has the sticker that says cannot be exported back to the USA but I purchased it certified pre-owned with 100k mile warranty in tact from a Ford dealer.

Be very careful, if a dealer offers warranty, theirs or the factories, get it in writing. A friend of mine bought a Canadian Ford truck from a Ford dealer in New York state. He was told by the dealer the truck was under the original factory warranty. When he had a CEL a few weeks later, the warranty claim was denied because the truck was first titled in Canada.

Probably taking advantage of the historically weak Canada to US dollar. But like mentioned, who and how the vehicle gets brought back impacts the warranty if any.

Was it certified pre-owned? Sounds like a dishonest dealer. Mine had full factory and extended warranty. Used it a couple times at a dealer I did not purchase the truck from with zero problems.

This is nothing new or unique. It has been going of for years. Ford off lease vehicles go to auction, the dealer does not keep them. Unless they changed it the past couple years. The trucks I am speaking about are not ex lease trucks. The dealers are actually sending out flyers looking for used trucks to send across the border.

I owned a ex Fort Mac truck. The mud on the frame was like cement. Took going under with a big screw driver to dig it off and a year of high pressure washes to get it all.
