I had no idea and although this is a Canadan quote, the thread suggests that many states have similar. Whch doesn't surprise me..usually Canada follows suit.

http://drivesmartbc.ca/rvs/operating-rvs-propane

Which begs the question...I wonder how many people travel with the fridge on?

I have now been in voice contact with an inspection officer with the CVSE..that is the truckers law kids, in BC..and to his knowledge, there are no regulations pertaining to this.

BC Ferries, Washington State Ferries and Marine Atlantic all require propane to be turned off. The inside passage from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert takes 15 hrs. Marine Atlantic from Sydney to Port aux Basques takes 6 to 8 hours and the ferry to Argentia takes about 16. You can add at least an hour to all of them for embarking and disembarking. Lots of RV's do the inside passage and Newfoundland was crawling with RV's when we were there. We ran into three Airstream caravans and several motorhome caravans. Yet to hear of any food poisoning outbrakes among RVers in either place.

I can say there is no law on PEI (Canada). Just went thru the Highway Traffic Act, 183 pages, and not one mention of it. Only reference is bulk transportation of compressed gases and the proper signage on the vehicle.

We have ferries at one end of the Island. They hand you a tag to attach to your RV tanks indicating the are to be shut off before you board.

So on PEI you are free to leave your propane on. Bring your fire extinguisher (sarcasm).

Please show us ONE law in writing not hearsay about running with propane on excluding the previous mentioned bridges and tunnels. Please show documentation of one fire caused by running/refueling with propane on. RVIA estimates nationwide there are as many as 30 million RV enthusiasts. So If you can't find one documented case. Well I am going to be polite.

And speaking of dangers while driving, I find it sort of fascinating when driving Stateside, the number of vehicles that catch fire and burn on the highways. I have's seen one actually burn but you can see the scorch marks where the asphalt burned or melted while the vehicle was burning. I see at least one a day when traveling.

Considering I've seen where a lot more vehicles have burned and I haven't seen where a single MH has burned due to propane, I'd have to give up driving cars and light trucks before I'd shut off my propane if I worried about either one.

No - someone needs to ask if your stuck for hours on a freeway, due to a massive pile-up, would you let people use your RV's bathroom....

It may be pay to play or if they are cute. :W

This doesn't just apply to this subject, but many others. If something is illegal, will your insurance company cover your losses.
This applies to propane, no-toad brakes, overweight vehicles & improper drivers licence. A conversation with your insurance company might not be a bad idea. I don't think a judge will take into consideration that a conversation on the internet is an excuse. YMMV.

But there is enough flow to operate every burner and appliance in your RV at the same time.

I wonder which ignition source is closer to the gasoline being pump, the fridge pilot light in a trailer being towed by the vehicle at the gasoline pump or that diesel idling on the other side of the dual pump (same pump station with two hoses to dispense gasoline and diesel).

We're all free to think what we wish. We are both basing our decisions on what we consider to be need vs perceived risk. I had a pickup with a dual fuel, propane/gasoline system. Automotive propane systems do not use portable tanks and are engineered to operate in hot engine compartments as an engine fuel system. All the combustion takes place inside the engines combustion chambers the same as burning gas or diesel, not as open flames in combustion chambers open to the atmosphere.

I'm not trying to tell people what to do but when it comes to this issue, an alternate view regarding the need to run with propane on and the possible risks, seems to be some sort of heresy to many on this forum.

It is impossible to prove a negative but that is what you are trying to do. I've never seen it happen, therefore it doesn't. I don't know what added risk there is to running with a pressurized system and lit appliances verses a shut off system, and neither do you. I have never told anyone not to use propane while towing but I have told them I don't and why. What surprises me is that when anyone suggests there could be another side to this discussion, they immediately get ganged up on, told they are talking nonsense and being alarmist wimps. So my question is, why so defensive?

Serious question here ------ do you drive a car or truck Powered by GASOLINE ????????

Have you ever started your car NEAR FUEL PUMPS ??????

Have you Ever seen the ARC/SPARK when engaging your starter ????
As a Retired Firefighter --- I know Gasoline Vapors are Present near Gasoline Dispenser Pumps.

And -----you dont DRIVE WITH propane on --- because its "Safer",,????:h

Yes, I don't drive with propane on because it is safer, how much safer, I don't know but neither do you. What's your problem with someone saying they don't drive with propane on and why they don"t? Why do you react so harshly to the suggestion? Why are you so sensitive about it? What nerve does it strike when someone actually says they do something different from you and gives a reason for it?

So Wilber

Why is it when someone dis -Agrees with your opinion, and states FACTS ----YOU GET defensive ?????
Why Are YOU so sensitive
What Nerve does it strike

You seem to be attacking people whos Opinion EXPERIENCE differs from yours?????

Why so defensive ??????

I have almost 30 years in the FIRE SERVICE that PROVES its SAFE to Run propane
I have been to MANY CAR fires at gas stations ---- yet I believe MANY PEOPLE ( including yourself)...drive cars which are PROVEN to explode.

I guess I ( and Thousands) of other RV's must be missing something ?????

So you have never responded to a gas explosion or fire that wouldn't have happened if the supply had been shut off. OK.

I think you have a better chance of getting hit by lighting than causing a fire with your propane on. What do the people do who have cars that run on propane, I guess they have to leave theirs on
