I am always amazed by the amount of worry folks express about their gear being stolen.
How many have actually, personally had something stolen while camping?
Please restrict yourselfs to personal experience only while on the road or camping.
I don't want answers about your brother in law,or storage or driveway theft.
Never in my life have I had a theft, and I am extremely lax in the security department.
I know that crime can occur anytime anyplace, and am just trying to determine whether the concern displayed by many is real or paranoia

I only have one story that happened to my neighbor camper when camping up in the Smoky Mtns Natl park at ELKMONT Camp Ground. This happened about three years ago...

Me and my neighbor was the only two occupied camps in loop. I was setup in C7 and he was in C9 across the road from me.

He had small TT setup and I was in my OFF-ROAD POPUP setup.

We of course visited alot and talked about what all we were using etc doing what we always do when camping. He had 3KW Honda Generator chained to a small tree sitting out in plain sight. My generator is a 2KW Honda generator sitting secured in the back of my truck bed near the tailgate corner. It is totally covered with a folding hard plastic bed cover when not is use. I just pull mine out onto the tailgate when I use it...

We both left the camp site this one morning to go to the local town for supplies. I got back around 2PM in the afternoon and could not turn down my loop because of a tree laying across the road. So I just went all the way around the camp and came in the other side of the loop road and parked at my camp site. Sure enough the tree was cut down in the early afternoon while we were both gone from the camp area. His 3KW Honda Generator was gone. Just after I showed my neighbor shows up and there we both stand in disbelief that his generator was stolen in broad daylight. We asked around some other campers and no one mentioned they heard anything. It probable was cut down with a hand saw since it was around 8-10 inches in diameter...

Not much you can do...

I personally haven't lost anything in all my years of tent camping and the past five years camping in my OFF-ROAD POPUP. I have found out most neighbor campers tend to look out for one another,

However any of these special items like small generators and the such is just too easy to grab and run...

With typical chained 2KW generator sitting out in the open like this google photo probably would not last long in an unoccupied camp site.

I'm with Hondavalc.
Worst problem was the racoons tearing up my cooler to get to the meat.
I put a couple of lawn chaires out with a "Free" sign on them but no one wanted them, so I got smart and put up a sign that said $1.00 each--Someone stole them and did'nt leave the money.

Other than a few bandits wearing masks stealing items out of the cooler over the years, we have only had a laundry bag and soap taken while we were doing laundry in a Branson campground.

We've never had anything stolen but we don't leave much out. Preventing the opportunity of theft is the key to not having stuff taken. We always put away lanterns, chairs, grills, etc. We chain up bicycles.

None of us can ever know for sure if anything is vulnerable to theft so...we've always been proactive. Another reason we continue this practice...a friend in the parking spot across from us at a state park we use annually in Ohio did have a bicycle stolen on a busy weekend. There were lots of families..one of the kids came along and took it. They found it at another site in the RV park.

All of this is especially true on busy weekends.

I've experienced theft while camping. We had gone up to the mountains early on Friday to set up the tents, etc. My dad had to work so we were supposed to meet him at a little store where we normally bought fishing supplies. We were only gone about fifteen minutes. After we met my dad, we drove back to camp and found the thief sitting on our picnic table eating our food. It was a black bear. We let him steal all he wanted. :B

I'm not paranoid about having stuff stolen but I do use diligence in keeping most of my stuff secure. My thought is it won't keep the crooks away but will keep the honest people honest.

That said, a lot of our gear is worn out so crooks would get what they deserve.

Been Rving since the 50s and have NEVER had anything stolen from a camp site and I make it easy. I leave my gear sitting around the campsite (generators, chairs, coolers and most anything else. My campsites are OFTEN in the back country where there are FEW other people around which can both be a benefit (not many to steel from me) and a determent (not many around to prevent it). In the real world probably isn't a factor either way because I've had the SAME good fortune when camping in public campgrounds. I have on far fewer occasions used private RV Parks and nothing stolen there either but MOSTLY those occasions were overnight stays so I assume, the bad guys just hadn't gotten their "gang" together yet ๐Ÿ™‚

I've had bags of garbage including stuff from a bag toilet stolen from the bed of my pickup. Saved me having to make a trip to the dumpster.

However, I've camped by someone who had their fuel filler door snapped off one night and their vehicle's gas tank siphoned, and camped at a CG in north TX where some MHs were on blocks sans wheels... and not by the wishes of the owners.

In nearly 50 years of camping, have had nothing disappear. We always leave the site set up for use. Chairs, cooler, lanterns, stove, cooler, etc.
