Flea collar in refrigerator compartment?

When doing the walk- through on our new camper, the tech recommended that we put a flea collar in the refrigerator compartment (outside access/vent) to deter insects. He said that the screens you can place between the louvers restrict the airflow too much. I have never heard of using a flea collar like this, any thoughts or experiences?

I've had one in my outside fridge compartment since my fiver was new. No problems.

I was in Saudi Arabia for 6 months back in 1991 and we were told to take them with us to wear. I didn't really want to do that so I ignored that idea.

on edit If you are talking about the outside vent to your refrigerator, I've heard of the pest strip thing.
Don't know how well it works.
If you are talking about a refrigerator in a bay or freezer I have thought about a HotShot pest strip, in wet bay, and engine compartment while in storage. Spiders get into everywhere.
The Strips work real well in the garage next to the garage doors which do not seal completely.

I was told they are drawn by the smell of the propane. We cut a flea collar in half and put in fridge and hot water heater compartments.. No bugs so far.

By god NO. And the salesperson that told you that should be fired. Just one more reason not to believe anything an RV salesperson says. :R

There are some serious insecticides in flea collars. Not to mention the fumes from it coming into the RV which it will.

12 years RV'ing no screen on the fridge vent and I have had no bug problems. If you "store" it for any length of time I would put a screen on the inside of the vent and take it out when you start using the RV.

Depending where you live, regarding what type of bugs want to get in like mud dabbers in my area when 'parked' a long time. Trust me they don't fly alongside my MH while I am driving down the highway trying to get in! :W

Makes sense to me, another product is the HOt Shot Fly strips, but these are not as easy to use as the old Shell Vapona strips since the Hot Shots come pre-enclosed in a plastic holder (you'd need to cut 'em into segments)

Flea collars contain an insecticide, (Imidacloprid). They are designed to kill fleas. They may be too weak to harm wasps and spiders but they do repel them. Yes, flea collar would likely keep mosquitoes off your neck if you wore one, but your arms and legs are too far away to keep the buggers away from them!

I tried the flea collar, and got wasps. Then I tried about 3 moth balls (more at first, but the smell went to the interior!) and got wasps again. No dice here.

Used flea collars for years in gas compartments. No insects of any kind. Cut long collars in 2 or 3 pcs and distribute them.

This goes back to about 2004 or 2006 on RV.net. I went to AK in 2006 I think, need to look at the pictures again to be sure. Anyway, I had a spider build web in, what I remember, was the water heater. I cleaned it out and from suggestions at that time and put used dog flea collars into all of my exterior places that have LP associated with them ever since. One TT, one class A and one class C.

I have NEVER had a spider problem since. I will take that further and say no bug problems around LP loving critters on outside.

My flea collar experience,, Have not had wasps yet,, But I did have a spider take up residence in the gas outlet for the refrigerator propane port.. It would not light,, I could smell propane.
Took it apart and sprayed compressed air through there,, A small web and tiny spider got blown out.. Works great now!

I have to say that I was very skeptical when the tech suggested the flea collar in the refrigerator compartment. It's probably a bit like chicken soup - it can't hurt. I did not put any screens over the refrigerator louvers in my old camper and I didn't have any problems (lucky). So, unless anyone can give me a reason not to put screens in the louvers I am going to put them in.

The same chemical in flea collars was used in the old Shell pest strips. if I remember right it is a form of nerve gas.
