I really have to wonder about this statement though. Last 4th of July I went camping with a group that included a newer Dodge 2500 with the Cummins. Unfortunately I didn't catch what year and engine, but its rather unimportant.

I was towing my trailer, about 6500 lbs, and he was pulling a 26 foot with slideout that weighed about the same. We all met up near our houses and drove about 150 miles to the park together. I got right around 10 mpg pulling roughly the same weight on the same roads at the same speed. He said he was getting about 11. All things considered... that's the same mileage to me.


He must have had a 2010 through 2012 model. They had a filiter and got terrible mileage. They now use DEF and will get around 15 mpg towing that weight.

Florida and Oregon are a lot different topography. I have a buddy with the 6.0 and an 8500# trailer and he hates it. Sure, rolling down a flat road is great the other 98% of the time it's a dog. We have A LOT of hills here... especially at higher elevations where the engines lose power. And I think the 6.0 is the most capable of the older engines - the Ford 5.4 was really a dog. I'd imagine the 5.7 Hemi is a bit better. The 6.4 Hemi and the Ford 6.2 look awesome. Am I imagining things or does Chevy/GMC have a new engine offering to replace the 6.0??


Would be nice if GM brought back the 8.1 (496)....yeah, it never met a gas station it didn't like, but that was one towing machine engine...I had one in an 01 Chevy 2500 with 4:10..awesome truck..guess GM gave it up because:h..anyway, it was a great engine..


Imagine a reworked 8.1L with direct injection and a turbo.

Yeah it would be expensive but mercy what a towing motor (if done right of course) that'd be.

I built a 2015 2500HD today. The same old 6.0 was the only gas offering.

Once GM decides to update their HD gas engine,I'll be going back to a gas truck.

The 6.4L cuts deeply into the diesel TV territory. The main advantage the diesel has is pulling at highway speeds in hilly, 4% - 7% country. The 6.4L will work while the 6.7L purrs along. Acceleration and climbing in the steep mountains the 6.4L and the 6.7L are actually shoulder to shoulder. Comparing the stability of the 2013 6.7L to the 2014 6.4L there is no comparison. The 6.4l pulls a TT much better due to the five link rear suspension. I think that the diesel pulling group just moved up quite a bit. MM49

My 6.0 gm will pull 8500 the speed limit or better on 99%+ of the roads I have ever been on. On the interstate just set the cruise at 65-70 and steer.

The ford 6.2 and gm 6.0 will put more power to the wheels at just about every road speed than the ford v10 or the chevy 8.1 or years past.

I suspect the 6.4 hemi will do as good or better than the ford and gm engines. It should be a good setup for someone looking to tow a larger trailer that doesn't want a diesel.

Not sure where the GM 6.0 can't pull 8500lbs... Guess it's time to trade up...lol... The current 6.2 ford, 6.0 gm, 5.7 dodge has no problems pulling heavy loads. Years back the mighty 454 was weaker then the current gas jobs. I pull close to 10000 or higher, no issues with my 6.0. Anyway I'm sure the new 6.4 will perform very nicely, looking forward in hearing a future tow report.

I canceled my 14 Cummins today, my 03 has years left in her and all the smog stuff on the new ones, plus the big bucks and several other factors made me back out of the deal. In another 5 years we'll see what is out there. I might just go to a C class MH or smaller TT and get the gas. To close to retirement to deplete funds right now. Too bad, would have liked to enter retirement with a new diesel but better to error on the side of caution. By the time I was done the new Ram would have been 60K. In 5 years it will be worth 30-35. That is one big hit. So I'll get out the wax and do some maintenance to make her last another 5+. Save the bucks for fuel and trips. The 6.4 will probably tow nice up to a certain weight and loose power in high altitude. It will also not get the mpg of a diesel and will need bigger RPM's on the grades, BUT, gas is cheeper than diesel and the diesel option on trucks is around 8k. Plus now DEF on the diesel. Complicated choices.

I test drove one before buying my Cummins. Seemed ok. Didn't romp on it. I was testing the fuel mileage. Avergaed 9.8 on a little test loop I drove. Couldn't accept that kind of fuel mileage so I stayed with a diesel.

2500 with the 3.73, crew cab 6'4" bed. Should have about 3500# payload, which is more than my previous F350, and I liked the ride of the coil springs. Will definitely give a review once I have it and towed with it.

Keep me updated once you get it - if you are able. Really interested to see how it performs etc.

What axle ratio did you go with? 3.73 or 4.10? 2500 or 3500?
