Best/safest route from Phoenix to South Lake Tahoe Dec 1 ?

We are pulling a 22' travel trailer from Peoria, AZ, (NW of Phoenix) to South Lake Tahoe. Camping in Tahoe for the ski season. Any suggestions on a safe, no chains route would be appreciated.Arnie

We are leaving Reno next Thursday and heading across Nevada on U.S. 50. Is this risky considering possible snow at the higher elevations? I'd love to see this stretch of road but may be starting out too late in the year.
